Photography purposes | Why Blogger not Wix?

Be sure of what you want...

For a long time I was looking for a platform on the internet that would meet my requirements with photography "business" and needs. I did not want it to be something over the top and I always wanted to create something from scratch. Unfortunately I'm not that capable of designing websites, so it helped me decide why I chose Blogger.
At the beginning I already tried my strength on the blog, unfortunately without much knowledge about writing posts or visualizing the site I quickly gave up. At that time, I was looking for an alternative and found the WIX platform. It is a website that allows you to create your own website from scratch without HTML knowledge. Everything works on the principle of "drag and drop". It was definitely something for me!

Ready? Go!

So I chose a template (and they have over 500 - the choice is huge!) and I started to make changes according to my whims. Once I created my dream site I felt relief. I saved it and later on published. I even had my domain purchased and I was proud of my work up to a point. I don't know if it only worked for me: when I finished everything up after a while something stopped working or the option was not in the place where I left it... It irritated me but at some point I found that I can't sit still and modify everything again and again. I spent a good few weeks to refine it all and something was still wrong.

Pros and Cons

Anyway I was happy customer for a while... I can for sure agree there are good points of using WIX especially if you're the person who loves to do everything on their own and likes to save time on designing from scratch however you still may get disappointing results.

Pros:
  • Drag and drop - this is good point for someone who loves time-saving and would like to create website in shorter period of time; simply just drag and drop feature to desired place.
  • You're not locked in long term plans - this means you can cancel your plan whenever you want with no fee's.
  • Interface - all tools you need to design your website are just few clicks away, literally on the same editor screen.
  • Problem? - No problem, if you struggle with anything or would like someone to design website for you simply request this with WIX team and they will help you immediately.
  • Blog - you can also create your blog on your website, it works little bit differently but still does with limited space.
Cons:
  • Adverts - starter plan will display adverts on your website unless you'll buy domain as the cheapest option.
  • Limited space - even if you'll buy the most expensive plan you will eventually run out of space. Me, as a photographer I use my website to upload full photo shoots and I require unlimited option.
  • Drag and drop designs can limit your creativity - WIX allows you to drag features in certain places, some of the boxes are locked and it won't let you design your website exactly how you intended it.
  • No actual apps provided - App store gives option to quick install their apps. You’ll get to add I-frames instead of real functionality to your website and it's not the ideal look you'll be finding at the end of the day.

After all the ups and downs I came back to the starting point. I decided, however that Blogger will offer me more even if it is more limited. Let me explain why.
Despite the fact that WIX offers me quite "free" navigation around the site and making changes as I want and when I want it on the other side blogger overcame in several facts:

Pros:
  • Unlimited space - Blogger offers unlimited space but they have exception about minimum post size which doesn't really bother me at least.
  • Blogger templates - there are some which you can use for free but are simple and boring. To upgrade mine I bought template to upload from BrandAndBlogger on etsy.com. in general prices on etsy starts from £4! Bargain! Directions are provided by seller and really simple to apply on your website.
  • No ads - even if you don't own any domain there are no aps when you upload template.
  • Cheap domain - I bought mine for just £10 for 12 months - WIX offers £10 monthly plan...
  • Create gallery and inform you clients - as a photographer I wanted to combine website and blogging. Blogger gave me opportunity to upload as many photographs I require without losing quality and space therefore my clients have availability to click on post read about it or just look through the gallery on specific photo shoot and category.
Cons:
  • HTML - it's a definite disadvantage for me because I have no clue what all those signs means however once I found my perfect template and I made changes according to instructions provided regarding HTML language I have no problem to set it all up. If I do I ask for help - simple.
  • SEO - it's really weird to set it up - actually you building it during updating posts for example including location, labels and description in uploaded post. It may take time to show up in Google search keys but I think this is still better than SEO wizard on WIX.
  • Template layout - before you buy a template think about how you want your blogger to look like and what functionalities will be advantageous for you and your clients. Once uploaded you cannot make changes to column layouts.
  • Old school service - blogger doesn't have a lot of features to provide like WIX or even WordPress but I guess this is their way to maintain. Blogger is still developing but slowly.

Some of you may say and would prefer to work on more complex platforms because it's processional and gives you more features, but I'm telling you; if you look around better you can change your simple blog website into something magnificent without spending time on codes and irritating that exact feature is not exactly where you moved it to. A little bit of research makes your life easier.

What platform is your favorite?

  2. I have this problem currently, I use Adobe Portfolio because it's free and it's not complicated but the design is so poor - I just can't find myself there. On the other hand, even if I did some front-end courses, I know HTML, CSS and all that stuff I'm too lazy to design my portfolio from the beginning, the other problem is SEO - blogger cuts SEO but using WIX = money and to be honest I barely make any money on photos since I'm a product photographer and I prefer to work on lifestyle shots than product photos. Still, if I have to choose I guess blogger is more comfortable.

    1. That's another good point, if you're on the budget it is also worth to consider blogger as "one time payment" :D

    1. Zgodzę się, niby WP taki profesjonalny i można go spersonalizować jako stronę internetową. To nie znaczy, że Z blogger'em nie można zrobić tego samego ;) ta prostota w blogerze do mnie bardziej przemawia :D
